South African Cities Two Decades on from Apartheid

Historically Divided between Rich and Poor

Two decades on from the end of apartheid, South Africa remains ethnically divided where the distribution of wealth is concerned. A larger black middle class is definitely capable of making changes to this unsatisfactory situation – but this will not necessarily affect the cityscape. There is no shortage of suggestions for solutions to create a more inclusive city. But the last 20 years have shown that large parts of the plans have proved ineffective in removing the historic barriers in real life.

Jährliches Stipendiatentreffen der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Südafrika

Zum Abschluss des akademischen Jahres 2013 lud die Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung am 5. Dezember ihre aktuellen und ehemaligen Stipendiaten und Stipendiatinnen zu einem Abendessen im Länderbüro Johannesburg ein. Die jährliche Zusammenkunft der KAS-Alumni dient der Pflege eines Netzwerks hochqualifizierter Akademiker und des Gedankenaustauschs über aktuelle politische und gesellschaftliche Fragestellungen.

Nachdem Präsident Frederik Willem de Klerk im September 1989 das Amt des Staatspräsidenten übernommen hatte, kündigte er in seiner Rede zur Parlamentseröffnung am 02. Februar 1990 an, über eine neue demokratische Verfassungsordnung verhandeln zu wollen. Gleichzeitig ordnete er die Aufhebung des Verbots zahlreicher Oppositionsparteien und insbesondere die sofortige Freilassung Nelson Mandelas aus der Haft an.

Recommendations from African civil society

The African Civil Society Dialogue on Development in Fragile Contexts gathers input from Afri-can civil society organizations and African aid experts on how government donors can better support peace- and state-building and development in fragile states. The first conference, organized by the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation and the Global Public Policy Institute, took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 18 October 2013. The recommendations and outcomes of the conference are summarized in the following.

The BRICS states must first find their role in order to form a stable partnership with the EU

The association of the growing economies of Brasil, Russia, India, China and South Africa represents 40 percent of the world’s population and, as of now, 25 percent of the world’s gross domestic product. Nevertheless, the chairman of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Elmar Brok, doesn’t see the so-called BRICS states as competitors for Europe. “I am relatively relaxed by the potential threat of the BRICS for Europe”, Brok said at an event organized by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Berlin.
