As a German political foundation that has fostered and supported political processes in South Africa since 1982, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung(KAS) continues this legacy through a wide range of initiatives, including political education and training, political consultancy and intensive research. One of these flagship initiatives is the KAS scholarship, hosted in collaboration with the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA).

As per tradition, KAS, in partnership with SAIIA, hosted their annual Welcome Event for the 2022 scholars cohort at the KAS Johannesburg Offices. A carefully selected framework of guests facilitated an intensive exchange and the introduction of new perspectives, preparing the incoming scholars for what to expect during their time as both scholars and interns.

The programme is output-focused, and the KAS-SAIIA scholars, who are assigned to mentors, generally, go on to high-profile and high-powered positions in public and private life.

The internship is from February to November each year, and scholars receive a full bursary for their tuition fees and a monthly stipend to cover their living costs and accommodation.

This particular event not only served to welcome this year's scholarship award recipients but simultaneously introduced the new Political Dialogue for Sub-Saharan Africa Programme at KAS, which will oversee this scholarship.
