WEBINAR:"The Power of Human Rights and Power Politics in the UN Security Council"

WITS University,International Relations Dept and KAS South Africa

The Foreign Policy Forum: Regional Powers in Global Politics accompanies South Africa's membership in the UN Security Council during 2019-2020. It consists of a series of six roundtables each dedicated to a particular theme. The overarching topic is the role of regional powers in global affairs which is characterized by a return of great power politics and erosion of multilateralism. Each roundtable consists of a select group of local and international experts.

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and University of Witwatersrand, International Relations Department invites you to this fourth event.

We are discussing the role human rights are playing in the Security Council. Key questions to be discussed are:

-Is the UN Security Council the right place to discuss human rights issues?

-Should human rights issues be discussed more frequently?

-How to discuss human rights violations with great powers (P5)?

-Is there an instrumentalization of human rights for power politics?
