Contrary to many expectations, Turkey's ruling AK Party suffered a defeat in the 2024 local elections. This was particularly surprising because the government seemed consolidated and the opposition fragmented. Nevertheless, the CHP in particular managed to gain a majority in the major cities and important provinces. The reasons for this lie in the tense economic situation and the ruling party's lack of voter mobilization. However, it remains to be seen whether the result heralds a long-term change in trend.
