Election Review Roundtable Series 2021

The Form and Substance of the 2021 Elections in Uganda

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Uganda recently partnered with the Julius Nyerere Leadership Centre (Makerere University) to convene the Post-Election discussion series; an academic and practical initiative, designed to answer specific questions relating to both the substance and process of Election 2021. The analysis is expected to draw lessons that have implications for future interventions in electoral democracy and governance reforms in Uganda. The discussion series will be based on commissioned academic papers that are well researched and analyzed in order to give the core group an opportunity to make realistic recommendations that can contribute to and inform political debate in Uganda.

Delivering Industrialisation

Economic transformation is necessary for sustained growth in output, decent jobs, incomes, and social development. The macroeconomic stability over the last three decades unlocked an episode of moderate to high GDP growth coupled with promising signs of early economic transformation, including export growth and diversification. However, progress against each economic transformation metric eventually stalled. Combined with rapid population growth, this has translated into large-scale underemployment, stagnating incomes for most citizens, and rising poverty. Faced with a rapidly growing, urbanising, and increasingly educated and connected youth population as well as growing discontent in cities, the political legitimacy of Uganda’s leadership will increasingly depend not only on peace and stability, but also on the promise of decent jobs and incomes.

Wahlen in Uganda

Motherly Crisis Management

Revisiting Angela Merkel's Leadership during the Coronavirus Pandemic

Celebrating 15 years in office this November, Angela Merkel is the European Union’s longest serving leader and the world’s longest serving female head of government. Recently, Merkel not only made headlines with her tenure jubilee but even more so with her style of leadership during the coronavirus crisis. Heralded as Germany’s “silver bullet“ of crisis management,1 the 66 year old has been leading by example and many leaders look to her for guidance and inspiration. Particularly for women, it is a promising quest to explore what Angela Merkel has to offer that makes her leadership during the pandemic so remarkable and exemplary.
