Details

KAS and ACFODE have received funding from the European Development Fund (EDF) as part of the Democratic Governance and Accountability Programme (DGAP) for the project: “Action for Strengthening Good Governance and Accountability in Uganda”, being implemented over a period of 24 months in 11 districts.

On 15th December 2011 the project team will unveil the Civic Education Toolkit, a set of guidelines and educative materials which will be used in the implementation of planned activities. The event will also present an opportunity for stakeholders and representatives of target groups to make their comments on the toolkit and discuss the relevance of civic education at the grassroots level.

The will bring together state and non-state actors in the promotion of democratic governance and accountability drawn from the national and district level. Eng. Badru Kiggundu, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission will be the keynote speaker. A panel discussion on the major topics in the focus of the project will also take place during the launch.

Background:

Inadequate information and training materials on democratic governance and accountability present one of the major challenges for civil society actors in democracy promotion. The training of civil society actors on democratic governance and accountability - which is part of the KAS-ACFODE project - demands a comprehensive and user friendly set of learning materials. These materials will be combined in the Civic Education Tool Kit and designed in a way that they are easily understandable by the local population as well and are therefore applicable for trainings at grassroots level. The tool kit will provide a combination of simple fact cards and brochures presenting basic democratic principles and a comic strip that will help popularising and demystifying democratic processes and the responsibilities of elected leaders and citizens. These components of the package can be used as a handout for participants at grassroots training activities. In addition, the tool kit will provide reference material and a practical methodological guide for the trained trainers which will help them conduct grassroots civic education.
