Powering 21st Century Cities with the Internet of Things

On Wednesday May 20, 2015 the Microsoft Innovation and Policy Center held a panel discussion on the topic of powering 21st century cities with the internet of things (IoT). They focused on using data collected by the IoT to solve problems that modern cities face, and the roles that various stakeholders play in the innovation, procurement, and implementation of both products and policy. Keynote Speaker Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) warned that Government would inhibit innovation if it misunderstands the technology, legislates beyond what is necessary, and gets in the way.

A DISUSSION ON THE EVOLVING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INDUSTRY AND DEFENSE IN THE UNITED STATES HOSTED BY CSIS

The first in a series on Next Generation Dialogue on Industry and Defense, this event focused on how increased globalization of the defense industry is affecting and interacting with cultures of national security within government and the military. The aim of The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) series is to provide a location for dialogue on the relationship between industry and defense, with a goal of providing a framework for policy. The panel on April 30th, 2015 included industry, defense, and legal experts offering their perspectives on the current climate.

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) provided the keynote address on April 17th, 2015 at the CSIS event “The Road to Iqaluit: The Arctic Agenda on the Eve of the U.S. Chairmanship”.

As the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) enters its ninth round of negotiations in New York on April 20th, 2015, concerns on both sides of the Atlantic remain about the impact the final treaty will have on production standards, consumer protection, and job security. Labor organizations remain actively engaged in the TTIP process. Labor groups’ concerns and suggestions for TTIP were the topic of discussion at an event hosted by the German Marshal Fund of the United States and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.

„Bis 2035 wollen wir energieautark sein“, bringt Kevin Knobloch, die veränderte energiepolitische Position seines Landes auf den Punkt. Der Büroleiter des US-Energieministers war einer der Hauptredner für den Vortrag des World Resource Institutes am 21.4.2015. Dem gegenüber stand die deutsche Perspektive präsentiert durch Jochen Flasbarth, Staatssekretär des deutschen Umweltministeriums. Thema der Diskussion mit dem Titel „Opportunities and Ambition: Transatlantic perspectives on current climate and energy policies“ waren vor allem die Unterschiede der deutschen und der US-Energiepolitik.

Die Zukunft der transatlantischen Kooperation mit China und die Entwicklung des „global governance“

Das American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) lud am Mittwoch den 15.04.2015 zu einer Panel Diskussion ein, um mit ausgewählten Experten das Thema „Transatlantic Cooperation toward China And the Future of Global Governance“ zu erläutern. Die Veranstaltung gliederte sich in zwei Panels, die zum einen der Frage der „International Order and a Rising China“ nachgingen und zu anderem den Gegenstand des „Global Economic Governance“ darstellten.
