From the 14th to 16th of October 2026, the Media Freedom Festival will bring together journalists, policymakers, academics, civil-society organisations and members of the public in Johannesburg, South Africa, to discuss the importance of free and independent media for democracy.
Hosted by Moxii Africa, the three-day festival will focus on “Elections and Accountability: News, Digital Media and Information Integrity.” Ahead of South Africa’s local government elections, participants will explore challenges including misinformation and disinformation, the sustainability of local journalism, artificial intelligence, platform accountability, journalists’ safety and declining public trust in the media.
This year, KAS Media Africa is proud to announce two guests from Germany. Cornelius Pollmer, Head of the Resort “Zeit im Osten” and Ellen Heinrichs, Founder and CEO of Bonn Institute will be joining the Media Freedom Festival as guests.
The programme will include keynote addresses, panel discussions, masterclasses and interactive formats such as KAS Media Africa’s Reporter Slam South Africa, Rate the Hate, Quiz Night and the Media Freedom Market. The festival will also commemorate Black Wednesday and reflect on the continuing importance of protecting media freedom.
