From the 14th to the 16th of October, journalists, media experts and thought leaders gathered at the Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg for the Media Freedom Festival 2026.
Among the international guests were German journalist and head of the East German Department of “Die Zeit”, Cornelius Pollmer, and Ellen Heinrichs, former Journalist and Founder and CEO of the Bonn Institute. They shared their perspectives on artificial intelligence, changes in the media landscape and the importance of asking better questions.
Through keynote addresses, masterclasses and panel discussions, participants explored some of the most pressing challenges facing the media industry. The programme examined how artificial intelligence is transforming journalism, what these developments mean for newsrooms and how independent journalism can remain sustainable and relevant.
The festival created a space for journalists and media practitioners to exchange ideas, learn from one another and discuss practical approaches to shaping the future of journalism.
KAS Media Africa was pleased to support the festival as a partner. We thank Moxii Africa for organising an event that brought people together and encouraged important conversations about media freedom and the future of the profession.
