Bridging Europe and Africa: The Tunisian Nexus

Panel on Tunisia's political and economic development and its potential role as link between Europe and Africa, in the framework of the Rome MED 2018 conference

In the framework of the high-level international conference Rome MED 2018, hosted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI), the KAS Regional Program South Mediterranean contributed to a panel entitled “Bridging Europe and Africa: The Tunisian Nexus”.

Dr. Canan Atilgan, Director of the KAS Regional Program South Mediterranean chaired the panel that shed light on Tunisia's current political and economic development and discussed the country’s potential role as link between Europe and Africa.

The panel featured among others Hedi Larbi, Associate at the Belfer Center of Harvard University and former Tunisian Minister of Economic Infrastructure and Sustainable Development, the Tunisian political analyst Youssef Cherif, and Rafik Abdessalem, Director of the Tunisian Centre for Strategic and Diplomatic Studies, who provided insights into current challenges Tunisia is facing and pointed to necessary reforms in order to overcome these challenges. Christian Danielsson, Director-General for Enlargement of the EU, and Miriam Allam, Head of the MENA-OECD Governance Program discussed the role of international organizations in supporting Tunisia’s ongoing transition.  Antonio Cammisecra, CEO of Enel Green Power shed light on potentials of economic development through private sector activity exemplified by the energy sector.
