Twenty-four countries across the continent of Africa will be holding elections this year. Unfortunately, many of our past elections have been mired in controversy; research indicates that more than half of Africa’s ongoing conflicts are a result of claims over legitimacy which poses a massive security risk. These elections will determine the democratic trajectory of our continent and for that reason, it is an opportune time to convene a political summit on Electoral Accountability in Africa. While it is critical to address our imminent electoral challenges, it is also important for civil society organisations to take the long view. The summit will be attended by election stakeholders such as civil society organisations, representatives of election management bodies and politicians from across Africa that will speak to the state of electoral accountability in their respective home countries.
