The National Human Security Forum (NHSF) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) is hosting a hybrid expert roundtable discussion in our series of the bi-monthly National Human Security Forum. This session's focus lies on
"Emergency Response to Lebanon's Human Security Crisis: The Role of International Organizations"
and will be held on Wednesday, 22nd of September, 11:00 - 13:00 a.m.
The “National Human Security Forum” aims to strengthen stakeholder’s partnership in Lebanon between the military, security institutions, civil society and (I)NGOs through engagements and discussions to reinforce mutuality and cooperations, build capacities, exchange information, and maintain open communications on ways to maintain coordination efforts for rapid response to disasters and threats to human security.
In light of the cascading crises, the need for coordinating resources and assets has never been greater. This stakeholder roundtable is hosted to endorse a common understanding of the roles played by international actors in the current emergency. It aims to explore ways and means international organizations is responding to the ongoing and fast deteriorating social and economic conditions in Lebanon, their challenges, and prospects for recovery. Additional attention is directed towards discussing current emergencies facing the Lebanese military institution to recommend best approaches and engagement plans.
Stakeholders participating include representatives of international organizations (both humanitarian and development organizations), non-governmental organisations, the diaspora, Lebanese Armed Forces - CIMIC, security agencies, and academia.
Severine Rey was appointed as OCHA Head of Office in Lebanon in May 2019. She joined OCHA in New York in 2006. After several years as Desk Officer covering Haiti, Pakistan and Central Asia, she moved to Geneva where she led the Humanitarian Leadership Strengthening Section between 2017 and 2019. Prior to joining OCHA, Severine worked with UNHCR in Chad, Western Sahara and Kosovo. She is an Engineer from the Ecole Centrale de Lyon and has a Master Degree from the College of Europe.
Haneen Sayed is the World Bank Lead for Human Development in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan and covers the fields of education, health, social protection and the labor market. She joined the World Bank in 1992, where she worked on Indonesia, Pakistan and the Caribbean, prior to being appointed Country Manager for Korea and Burma, as well as senior advisor for Middle East and North African countries at the World Bank’s Boards of Executive Directors. She has lectured in New York and worked for Morgan Stanley Bank, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), and Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFSED).
Ziad Abdel Samad is the Executive Director of the Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND), which brings together 30 NGOs and 9 national networks from 10 Arab countries, active in the protection of social and economic rights. President of the Euro-Mediterranean NGO Platform, Abdel Samad is engaged in many global and regional networks such as the of Social Watch, and the coordination group of the Civil Partnership for Development Effectiveness (CPDE). He is also engaged with research institutions the Asia Pacific Research Network (APRN) and the Reality of Aid Network (RoA).
Richard Akiki is the Associate Protection Legal Officer for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Lebanon as of 2020. Akiki joined UNHCR in 2015 and worked on a variety of legal protection issues. Prior to that, he worked as a Legal Officer in the Norwegian Refugee Council and the UNDP for several years. He brings 10 years of legal expertise from a private law firm specializing on Criminal law, Commercial and Corporate Law, Contracts, Labor Law, and Environmental law.
This roundtable aims to produce joint recommendations of ways how to engage in and coordinate emergency response in order to strengthen the human security of the country.
