Inmitten eines diplomatischen Aufgebots mit über 140 Staats- und Regierungschefs sowie Würdenträgern aus aller Welt versammelten sich die Vereinten Nationen (UN) vom 22. bis 30. September zur hochrangigen Woche der 80. Sitzung der Generalversammlung (UNGA) in New York. Doch diese verlief nicht wie gewohnt. Im Vorfeld ihres 80. Jahrestags am 24. Oktober befindet sich die UN in einer existenziellen Krise. In einer Ära rasanten Wandels und wachsender Turbulenzen hat die Organisation nur schleppend auf neue Entwicklungen reagiert und sich kaum angepasst – was Fragen nach ihrer Wirksamkeit und Relevanz aufwirft. Dementsprechend war die Stimmung bei UN80 deutlich weniger feierlich, obwohl ein historisches Jubiläum bevorsteht.
