We are proud to launch a new call for papers called "Following Konrad Adenauer’s Legacy: democracy and (un)democratic attitudes" to celebrate Konrad Adenauer 150th birthday.
Konrad Adenauer, the first German Chancellor, tells us that democracies simply cannot exist, if there are no democrats with it. To commemorate Konrad Adenauer's 150th birthday and his legacy, as well as to collaborate with KAS Research Chair, we are announcing a call for papers and a workshop for 2026.
Against the current challenging global situation, we are interested in the simple question: Why do people turn their back on democracy? Discovering this, we wish to organize a workshop, and we want to answer this question from different perspectives. We are interested in contemporary and historical contribution that allow us to understand the reasons why democracy is no longer might be the only viable option for citizen, as well as the type of citizens who turn their back on democracy.
The workshop will be held at the University of Ottawa on April 23rd and 24th, 2026. We invite established and emerging scholars working on democracy and (un)democratic attitudes in any geographical setting to submit extended abstracts of roughly 500 words to the workshop convenor Daniel Stockemer (dstockem@uottawa.ca) by December 31st, 2025. As a result, we plan to invite 8 to 10 scholars to this workshop, in which they can showcase the work they have done.
