Auf indischer Seite waren die Erwartungen an das Zusammentreffen der G20 im Vorfeld gering. Die Administration in Neu-Delhi hatte sich schon früh positioniert und eine allgemeine, globale Steuer auf Finanzmarkttransaktionen abgelehnt. Stattdessen nutzte der indische Premierminister Manmohan Singh die Gelegenheit, den versammelten Staats- und Regierungschefs der volkswirtschaftlich bedeutenden Nationen der Welt die Sichtweise der Schwellenländer aufzuzeigen.

Am vergangenen Freitag ging im bhutanesischen Thimphu das 16. Gipfeltreffen der South Asian Regional Cooperation (SAARC), das gleichzeitig das 25-jährige Bestehen der Staatengemeinschaft markierte, zu Ende. „Towards a Green and Happy South Asia“ lautete das Motto der gemeinsamen Deklaration der SAARC-Mitglieder. Die Bereiche Klimawandel, Umwelt und Energie, Maßnahmen zur Implementierung des südasiatischen Freihandelsabkommens und die Förderung regionaler Strategien zur Terrorismusbekämpfung standen im Mittelpunkt der Resolutionen.
