This publication examines the external obstacles (on the part of employers) that are hindering the absorption of Arab graduates into hi-tech companies as well as the internal-personal obstacles (on the part of job candidates) that constitute an obstacle to the absorption of Arab graduates into hi-tech companies. Livni vor großen Herausforderungen

Die neue Kadima-Vorsitzende muss die Partei einen und eine stabile Regierung bilden

Nachdem Ministerpräsident Ehud Olmert und sein Kabinett zurückgetreten war und Staatspräsident Schimon Peres mit allen 13 Fraktionen in der Knesset Gespräche geführt hatte, wurde die neue Kadima-Chefin Tzipi Livni von Peres mit der Regierungsbildung beauftragt. Die Erhaltung der Einheit der Kadima-Partei sowie die Regierungsbildung stellen für Livni die größten Herausforderungen dar, bevor sie sich als Regierungschefin notwendigen und anstehenden politischen Entscheidungen widmen kann. Sollte sie Regierungschefin werden, geht es auch darum, ein Profil zu gewinnen, welches ihr bis zu den regulär anstehenden Wahlen im Frühjahr 2010 zum Erfolg verhelfen sollte.

Ministerpräsident Ehud Olmert kündigt Rücktritt an

Am Abend des 30. Juli 2008 gab Ministerpräsident Ehud Olmert bekannt, dass er nicht als Kandidat für interne Vorwahlen in der Kadima-Partei antreten wird. Außerdem kündigte er an, dass er in dem Moment von seinen Ämtern zurücktritt, in dem es einen Nachfolger als Parteiführer geben wird. Bis dieser neue Parteiführer eine neue Regierung formen kann oder es Neuwahlen zur Knesset gibt, kann noch einige Zeit vergehen. Bis dahin bleibt Ehud Olmert Ministerpräsident mit allen Vollmachten. Unmittelbare innenpolitische Veränderungen dieser Entscheidung halten sich deshalb in Grenzen.

Complementing IHL: Exploring the Need for Additional Norms to Govern Contemporary Conflict Situations

An International Conference

The international laws of armed conflict, known as IHL (international humanitarian law), were developed by the international community in the aftermath of World War II in an attempt to reduce the harm to civilians during periods of armed conflict. However, many (if not most) modern conflict situations in the world – such as those in Gaza, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and Kosovo – no longer conform to the classic models of violence that underlie the application of IHL. In this important international conference the Minerva Center for Human Rights at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in cooperation with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, together with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Tel Aviv Delegation and with the and the Bruce W. Wayne Chair of International Law, brought together 30 leading experts in an attempt to identify types of conflict situations that are at present inadequately regulated, and to explore the potential for developing IHL or locating new normative sources that may apply. In doing so, the conference sought to encourage the development of international law in ways that are conducive to the attainment of IHL's overriding goals: the mitigation of harm and suffering and the promotion of humanitarian interests, even in times of conflict.The conference was held in Jerusalem on June 1, 2 and 3, 2008.

KAS/YIFC-Workshop in Jerusalem

Ein innovativer Ansatz zur nachhaltigen Förderung der deutsch-israelischen Zusammenarbeit wurde jetzt bei einem Workshop der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Jerusalem diskutiert: In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Young Israeli Forum for Cooperation (YIFC) wurde erörtert, wie junge Erwerbstätige, die am Beginn ihrer beruflichen Karriere stehen, von deutsch-israelischem Erfahrungsaustausch profitieren und die Verbindungen zwischen beiden Ländern stärken können. An dem Workshop nahmen Dr. Christian Forneck, wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter von Philipp Mißfelder MdB, und Thomas Schneider, Vorsitzender der internationalen Kommission der Jungen Union, sowie Vertreter von YIFC und weiteren NGOs in Israel teil.

Die US-Wahlen im November dieses Jahres ziehen wie kaum ein anderes Ereignis bereits im Vorfeld das Interesse der Weltöffentlichkeit auf sich. Dies gilt auch und gerade für Israel.
