Digital trade expands

COVID19 has accelerated the adoption of digital technologies and services, allowing trade to virtually continue despite movement restrictions.

Key messages include:

  1. Cross-border e-commerce, digital payments and digitally enabled transactions in goods and services have expanded. 
  2. Digital trade expansion faces challenges such as the growing digital gap, antiquated trade rules, concerns on data ownership, privacy and security.
  3. Addressing these challenges require adapting forward-looking trade agreements, modernizing trade rules, and closing the digital divide between developed and developing economies.
