Dr. Hubertus Knabe, historian and Director of the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial, will hold a Public Lecture on “Historical Reconciliation in Germany – Lessons Learnt” at Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Cambodia. The Public Lecture wants to reflect on Germany’s path to deal with the past, discuss lessons learnt and how they could be helpful for other countries.

During the 20th century, Germany witnessed atrocities and mass violations of human rights committed by non-democratic dictatorships. Especially Germany had to struggle with its past after Hitler’s Nazi regime and the totalitarian East German state (1949-1990). The Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial was the main prison of the former East German state and is now a museum and memorial. The Historical Reconciliation was and still is a key for Germany to face its past and define itself as a democratic country within the European Union. Reconciliation is not simply a means of justice, but reconciliation is best understood as a long term, inclusive process combining justice, communal relationship healing, truth and acknowledgement, reparation and co-operation.
