Forum
Details
From 19 to 20 February 2009, the Secretariat of the Senate conducted a forum on Promoting the Role of Women of Commune / Sangkat Councils in the Decentralization and Deconcentration Progress in Koh Kong Province in collaboration with and funded by Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation. Senators as well as representatives from different provinces and from the Ministry of Planning, the Ministry of Rural Development and the Ministry of Finance and Economics participated in the meeting. As the senators are elected by the Commune Councils and by the members of parliament, the senate is a higher legislative institution and represents the communes’ interests at the national level. The government encouraged women to increase their participation in politics and highlighted the crucial role women can play in social development, particularly in the implementation of decentralization and deconcentration measures on the commune level. Thereby, they can take action to enhance their own capacities and contribute to the improvement of society as a whole.
