Women Political Leaders Capacity Strengthened

On the 22nd and 23rd of July, KAS Kenya, in collaboration with the KANU Party Women’s Congress, held a two-day capacity building workshop aimed at strengthening the political leadership skills of female leaders within KANU. The workshop is part of the Women and Youth Democratic Engagement (WYDE) Political Parties project funded by the European Union and led by ENoP.

The workshop brought together women leaders from Nairobi and other counties across Kenya, including Wajir, Marsabit, the Coastal, Eastern, Western, and Nyanza regions. Its main goal was to equip participants with knowledge, skills, and tools to navigate party structures, engage effectively in decision-making processes, and advance value-based leadership within KANU.

Over the two days, participants engaged in expert-led presentations, moderated discussions, group exercises, peer learning, and personal reflection. Sessions on party governance and decision-making processes, such as the “Mapping Power and Opportunity” exercise, gave participants practical insight into leadership pathways and influence points within the party. Activities on value-based leadership encouraged women to draft personal value statements and receive peer feedback, reinforcing their commitment to ethical and effective political participation. Networking exercises, including speed networking and the “Commitment Wall,” created spaces for mentorship, collaboration, and informal peer support, which participants agreed to maintain beyond the workshop.

The workshop also tackled gender-based barriers in politics, creating a safe environment for participants to share experiences of sexism, harassment, and exclusion. This fostered solidarity among participants and strengthened their capacity to advocate for inclusive political spaces. By the end of the workshop, participants had developed personal political roadmaps linking aspirations to actionable steps and gained a deeper understanding of party governance and leadership opportunities for women.

The lessons learned from the workshop highlight the importance of safe and participatory spaces where women can openly share experiences and reflect on leadership. Embedding sensitive topics within practical exercises enhanced engagement and encouraged concrete action. Sustainability is being ensured through the integration of the workshop model into county-level programs by the KANU Women’s Congress, along with mentorship networks established during the event. Follow-up activities, including refresher sessions and regional mentorship dialogues, are planned to maintain momentum and continued engagement.
