The end of the governing coalition between the Democratic Party (DP) and the Mongolian People's Party (MPP) did not come as a surprise—but the timing certainly did. The MPP, which has held a comfortable majority on its own since the parliamentary elections in June 2024, declared the alliance with the DP over during the night of May 21 to 22, 2025. A decision that appears to be strategically motivated: while the DP is being made the scapegoat for the government’s mixed record, the MPP is trying to conceal internal party tensions and secure its dominance. The "National Unity Coalition" project has thus come to an end after less than a year—yet another chapter in the history of Mongolia's unstable governments.
