The final leg of the three–year KAS/NSJ pilot program on Advanced Journalism was held in Maputo, Mozambique.
16 of the original 18 students who started the course in 2003 graduated with an Advanced Certificate in Journalism issued by the NSJ last month. Over the past three years, the journalists from nine countries have criss-crossed Southern Africa to be trained and assessed in no fewer than six modules including media management, science and technology reporting, economics journalism, training of trainers and others.
During the course, participants learnt how to report on Africa and the issues originating and affecting Africa. The course enlightened participants about positive developments taking place in Africa and encouraged them to report critically on the continental affairs. An in-house newspaper was produced by students during this time.
Among other topics, the course examined reporting on NEPAD, the African Union, HIV/AIDS, etc. The second part of the course will deal with media ethics policies. The modules were facilitated by Farayi Munyuki (editor of the Namibian Press Agency) and Edem Djokotoe (formerly training editor at the Post, Zambia)
