African Media Thermometer

Covid-19 seems to have turned every journalist in Africa into a health expert, writing about the effects of the pandemic, the search for medical solutions and the political implications. Until recently health journalism was dominated by topics like HIV-Aids, obesity and stress, cancer and depression.

KAS Media Africa, the Media Programme of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, is looking into the effects the pandemic is having on newsrooms; we examine misinformation on health issues, business models for health journalism and analyse the questions of quality and credibility in the media in Africa. In a series of podcasts we speak to our colleagues in Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The podcasts will go out weekly on Thursdays on August 13th, 20th and 27th 2020 and can be found on our website www.kas.de/mediaafrica, on our FB page @KASMediaAfrica and on Twitter: @KASMedia.

This will be followed by three brief virtual discussions on Thursday September 3rd, 10th and 17th 2020 with medical and media experts who bring in their on-the-job experiences and discuss the way ahead.

Veteran human rights lawyer and founder of the Health Justice Initiative (hji) Fatima Hassan will be our first keynote speaker on September 3rd. She will unpack why, now more than ever, access to medicine and patent law reforms are important for the African countries.
