The KAS funds an annual comparative review of the state of the media environment in Southern Africa.

The research is facilitated through the Nelson Mandela Institute, Law School based at the University of the Witwatersrand by telecommunications, media and technology specialists from the lawfirm of Edward, Nathan and Friedland.

The 2003 compendium focused on Malawi, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa. The upcoming 2004 review examines the state of play in Botswana, Swaziland and Zambia.

The purpose of the handbook is to help synchronize media legislation and support press freedom initiatives across the region.
