Investigative Journalism: Efficient against Corruption

Transitional countries are often distinguished by lack of transparency in politics and economics as well as high level of corruption. Furthermore they’re often characterized by deficits in their judicial systems.

That is why the improvement of those weak points is among the main issues on the agenda of young democracies as Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova. The KAS Media Program South East Europe provided journalists from the three countries with expert tips for investigative research at a workshop in Bucharest on March 14th-16th.

Investigative journalism not only plays an irreplaceable role in building and strengthening of civil society, but it also represents the most important control tool in fighting corruption and violations against transparency.

In order to fulfil their watch-dog function professionally and competently, investigative journalists not only need to be brave and have a fine sense. It also requires special expert knowledge, good information networks and familiarity with special tips and tricks in order to reveal, what has been veiled on purpose. This kind of knowledge was mediated by high qualified trainers from the region and Europe at the two-day workshop about research techniques and methods of efficient investigation.
