German Basic Law Day

For 76 years, Germany’s Basic Law has guaranteed freedom, dignity, and the rule of law. Adopted on 23 May 1949, it laid the foundation for a democratic Germany committed to European values and cooperation.

This day is closely tied to the legacy of Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany and a key architect of democratic reconstruction after World War II. His role in establishing the Basic Law as a pillar of stability and social cohesion shaped Germany’s post-war development.

At KAS, we celebrate not just a constitutional text, but a lasting promise: democracy must be defended, passed on, and lived – every single day.
