Lammert, who had attended the annual conference of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Cape Town prior to arriving in Windhoek, met with Namibian President Pohamba, the founding president Nujoma, and with MPs of a committee on foreign affairs.

At The University Centre for Studies in Namibia (TUCSIN), the oldest KAS partner in Namibia, Lammert learned about problems in the education sector. The Norbert Lammert Foundation has been supporting TUCSIN with grants for many years and is currently providing scholarships for 26 of its students.

Concluding his visit, Lammert introduced the KAS’s newest publication together with chief justice Shivute, namely Human Rights and the Rule of Law in Namibia. Lammert emphasised the importance of that project. He pointed to the independence of the judiciary as a central and indispensable element of democracy and the rule of law. He also noted the uniqueness of the German political foundations and their task of promoting democracy, and elaborated upon the work of KAS in general as well as with regard to the rule of law in particular.

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation has been active in Namibia since 1989 and works with several partners, including the organisation Women’s Action for Development (WAD), which had been created by the KAS as a self-initiated measure. WAD aims at improving the status of women in Namibian society, and at helping women achieve their potential through self-help measures.
