New Year’s Reception with the German Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Christoph Heusgen

At a reception with alumni and current fellows of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), Ambassador Christoph Heusgen, Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, spelled out the priorities during the German membership in the UN Security Council.

Expert Roundtable: Harvesting benefits & addressing challenges of migration

On November 19th, 2018 KAS New York invited selected authors of the research and publication project Refugees and Migrants in Law and Policy – Challenges and Opportunities for Global Civic Education to present their findings and discuss with other participating experts the implications of their research for the achievement of the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular Migration objectives. This outcome report is intended to give an overview of the discussed topics. Issues such as inclusive early childhood education, host community experiences, refugee integration through civic education, PTSD amongst refugees and migrants as well as the complexities of integration in South-South migration were addressed.

Globale Fluchtbewegungen bewältigen

Der nächste Schritt zu einer gerechteren Teilung von Lasten und Verantwortung

Mit dem Global Compact on Refugees versucht die internationale Staatengemeinschaft, die Lasten und die Verantwortung bei der Bewältigung der groβen und zum Teil lang anhaltenden Flüchtlingskrisen gerechter zu verteilen. Aufnahmeländer, die oftmals selbst mit Entwicklungsproblemen zu kämpfen haben, sollen stärker entlastet und unterstützt werden. Flüchtlingen soll ein selbstbestimmteres Leben, aber auch eine Rückkehr in das Heimatland ermöglicht werden. Auch die Optionen der Umsiedlung sollen im Sinne der Lastenverteilung noch stärker als bisher genutzt werden.

The UN Development Reform: A German Perspective

Sebastian Paust, Director of the Division „United Nations“ in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) spoke at a luncheon with German UN employees on November 7th about the UN Secretary-Generals reform initiatives, for he expressed the full support of his agency. The event was co-hosted by KAS New York Office and the Association of German Employees at International Organisations (VDBIO).

Der Globale Pakt für sichere, geordnete und reguläre Migration

Nach der Unterzeichnung des Migrationspakts müssen auch konkrete Schritte der Umsetzung folgen

Angesichts der starken Migrations- und Flüchtlingsbewegungen 2015 und 2016 kamen die 193 Staaten der Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen im September 2016 einstimmig zur Übereinkunft, dass aufgrund der Komplexität und Globalität der Phänomene Flucht und Migration internationale Vereinbarungen notwendig sind, die zum einen die Schwächen der Genfer Flüchtlingskonvention im Bereich des Flüchtlingsschutzes adressieren und zum anderen für den weitaus umfassenderen Bereich der Migration einen Rahmen für internationales Migrationsmanagement setzen.

ENGAGING THE PRIVATE SECTOR IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION

As the role the Latin American private sector can play in the fight against corruption is gaining attention, KAS New York has invited representatives of Industry Associations and Chambers of Commerce from Guatemala and Honduras to hold talks with key anti-corruption and good governance experts in New York.

What does the world expect of Germany?

KAS New York welcomed Paul Ziemiak, Member of the German Bundestag (CDU) and Federal Chairman of the Junge Union and Frances A. Devlin, American Council on Germany (AGC) Board Member and Director of Global Policy & International Public Affairs at Pfizer to discuss global expectations of Germany in the public and private sector.

Event Report

As part of a build-up and compact seminar, ten selected KAS fellows from a wide range of disciplines had the opportunity to meet with representatives of the United Nations, the EU Delegation to the United Nations, the German Mission and other New York-based organizations, and gain insights into the current challenges of the international world order.

The Future of Europe and Transatlantic Relations in a New Global Order: A View from the European Parliament

Mr. Klaus Welle, Secretary-General of the European Parliament, outlined his vision of the European Union as a geopolitical “pole” in a speech and a discussion at the KAS New York Office. He emphasized the importance of solidarity between EU member states and the importance of the transatlantic partnership. The event was cohosted by the American Council on Germany (ACG).
