Strengthening Migration Reporting in Libya

Training of Trainers

The majority of African migration towards Europe for the past few years was channeled through one single country – Libya. Fact-based and conflict-sensitive reporting on irregular migration and the conditions for migrants and refugees in the country requires a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon and its causes and effects as well as the complex legal framework.

In this context, the KAS Regional Programme South Mediterranean in cooperation with the Libyan Cloud News Agency (LCNA) organised a Training of Trainers for a group of Libyan journalists from 11 to 14 February 2019 in Tunis. The workshop aimed at strengthening the knowledge and understanding of Libyan journalists about the legal situation of migrants in the country, the complex economic, political, and social background of migration as well as the causes and effects of irregular migration. In the framework of the workshop, participants discussed with officials from IOM, UNHCR, the Delegation of the European Union to Libya, the International Centre for Migration Policy Development and the Libyan Red Crescent on different aspects of migration and the role of journalism in this regard. The group of journalists also developed different training schedules for workshops on migration-sensitive reporting to be held within Libya in order to enable local journalists in seven different locations to report unbiased and accurately about developments regarding migration flows in the country.
