In a high-density vertical city, building design plays a large role in reducing waste. Architects in New York City led the development of Zero Waste Design Guidelines for new and existing buildings to help the city reduce waste. Ms Clare Miflin, who led the NYC process, shared New York City’s experience in handling waste in an effective way. She elaborated in depth how the guidelines can be applied in terms of developing a waste management plan, reducing waste volume, providing equipments for organic food and designing food service strategies, etc. In addition, her team developed a waste calculator to estimate the volume to waste in constructions, which is useful for establishing a database for tracking disposables.

The BEC started the project that engages leaders in sustainable design from Hong Kong, Singapore and NYC to share design strategies, case studies and policy suggestions that can help high density cities reach zero waste goals. Panelists discussed the current development and challenges in waste management in Hong Kong. Space for onsite waste treatment is largely limited in most buildings. Landlords have common concerns over a large amount of investment in introducing technologies. The awareness about waste design or recycling remains low. Education would be needed for all stakeholders in the society in the long run.
