The annual conference takes place in the Saudi city of Jeddah on October 10th and 11th 2012. It is an initiative of the American Institute of Architects (Middle East Chapter), SESAM Business Consultants and the Saudi Umran Society. This year’s “Architecture & Design Days Jeddah” are devoted to Jeddah’s historical city centre and the social, cultural and economical opportunities of its regeneration processes. In this context, architect and assistant professor at the German University of Technology, Muscat (GUtech), Aurel von Richthofen, will give a lecture introducing how the Omani port city Mutrah has been redesigned and renovated under consideration of social, ecological and economical aspects of sustainability. A key feature of the urban development process has been the involvement of civil society stakeholders in Mutrah. Aurel von Richthofen will speak about the opportunities and challenges related to the civic participation in this context.
