Protection of Human Rights

A focal point of the work of the Rule of Law Programme is the protection of fundamental and human rights, both in its substantive and its procedural dimension. The inviolable dignity of the human being is the center and origin of all reflections. It demands the protection of human rights and is a core element of the rule of law and necessary condition for real functioning democracy. Besides human dignity and the free development of the personality, freedom of expression and of the press is of particular importance.

The Foundation of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) in 2009 and the adoption of the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD) in 2012 were first steps for a more efficient protection of human rights. The Rule of Law Programme Asia contributes to the promotion and strengthening of national and international human rights regimes by regularly organizing colloquiums, seminars and round tables for representatives of human rights organizations as well as legal experts.
