REGIONAL CONFERENCE “LEADERS FOR JUSTICE”

This was the 6th regional conference born out of the idea that a country’s economic development can benefit from the cooperation of regional partners based on strong regional judicial and legal systems.

Annual Jurists Conference 2017

ICJ Kenya in partnership with KAS' Rule of Law Program for Sub Saharan Africa convened the 2017 Annual Jurists Conference on the theme “The State of Human Rights in Africa: bridging the gap between aspirations, implementation and enforcement” in Mombasa between 21st and 25th November 2017. The main objective of this annual event is to offer jurists a platform to deliberate and contribute to the discourse on emerging rule of law, human rights and justice trends affecting Africa. Judges, Members of Parliament, representatives of constitutional commissions and the police graced the event.

Corruption and Constitutionalism in Africa

The 5th Stellenbosch annual seminar on constitutionalism in Africa was held from 19 – 22 September 2017 in Stellenbosch on the theme 'Corruption and Constitutionalism in Africa: Revisiting Control Measures and Containment Strategies'. It was jointly convened by the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies (STIAS; the KAS Rule of Law Program for Sub-Saharan Africa; the Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa (ICLA)- University of Pretoria and the South African Research Chair in Multilevel Government, Law and Policy - Dullah Omar Institute, University of Western Cape.

KAS’ African Group of Experts on International Criminal Justice Annual Meeting 2017

KAS’ African Group of Experts on International Criminal Justice held its 2017 annual meeting in Lilongwe, Malawi on 24th and 25th August 2017. Dr. Janet Banda, SC, Solicitor General and Secretary for Justice and Constitutional Affairs of the Republic of Malawi graced the event and delivered the keynote remarks on behalf of Hon. Samuel Tembenu, Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs of the Republic of Malawi.

Gender and Transitional Justice in East Africa: Exchanging Experiences and Expertise

The conference on Gender and Transitional Justice in East Africa was jointly organized by the KAS' Rule of Law Program for Sub Saharan Africa and Strathmore Institute for Advanced Studies in International Criminal Justice (SIASIC). Other partners included; The International Nuremberg Principles Academy, Prosecuting Conflict- related Sexual Violence Network and Adélia Foundation. The overall objective of the conference was to bring experts together to explore ways forward to ensure women’s full participation in gender perspectives throughout transitional justice processes in East Africa.
