The 13th Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert Annual Lecture, supported by the Konrad‑Adenauer‑Stiftung (KAS) South Africa and hosted at Stellenbosch University’s STIAS venue, brought together more than 400 guests for a compelling engagement on “Everyday citizen leadership: 30 years and beyond.” Delivered by Busisiwe Mavuso, Chief Executive of Business Leadership South Africa, the lecture offered an unflinching assessment of South Africa’s political culture and a call for renewed civic responsibility and ethical leadership.
Mavuso highlighted the interconnectedness of political accountability and economic stability, emphasising the urgent need to address governance failures, inequality, youth unemployment, and the national education crisis. Her reflections echoed the democratic values championed by Dr Frederik van Zyl Slabbert, underscoring the role of courageous citizenship in shaping South Africa’s future.
The event forms part of KAS South Africa’s broader work under Project Objective 1.4, which aims to strengthen good governance, constitutional compliance, and evidence‑based public engagement. The lecture also reinforced a tradition of critical dialogue at Stellenbosch University, contributing to the development of young leaders and stimulating further debate across academia, civil society, and the KAS network.
