The conference commemorates the anniversary of FW de Klerk's historic speech on February 2nd, 1990, which set the stage for the end of apartheid and a non-racial, democratic South Africa. A cornerstone in South Africa's political calendar, it serves as a hub for intellectual exchange, bringing together renowned speakers, public leaders, academics, young learners, and others - promoting a more just, democratic, and united South Africa.

In the context of the 2024 general election, this year's conference was of even more importance. Themed 'South Africa at 30 – Looking Back, Looking Around, Looking Forward,' the event provided a platform for reflection on the country's 30-year journey as a democratic state.  Esteemed speakers, including Mr. Trevor Manuel, Adv Kholeka Gcaleka, and Mr. Geordin Hill-Lewis, delved into South Africa's past, present challenges, and future potential.

Gregor Jaecke, resident representative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation in South Africa welcomed the participants. Mr. Jaecke remarked that South Africa “finds itself at a critical juncture in writing the next chapter of its history. Therefore, this annual conference provides opportunity to think about what has happened, what is happening now and where South Africa would like to go in the future”. Looking back, Trevor Manuel emphasized the importance of events such as the FW de Klerk Annual Conference: “We can build on an incredibly strong constitution, but it does mean that we must create opportunities to discuss. If we don't deal with South Africa’s issues adequately the risk is always that history might repeat itself in strange ways.”

While Public Protector Adv Kholeka Gcaleka reflected on South Africa’s constitution being the most progressive document in the world, Cape Town's Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis lastly took a look forward: “The way we are going to build the future is by setting a clear sense of national ambition that refuses to accept that our country can only decline. Let it never be said of South Africa that we have a great future behind us.”

We extend heartfelt gratitude to the FW de Klerk Foundation for hosting this crucial event and being a reliable partner over the years. Thanks to all attendees for enriching the discussions.
