Konrad Adenauer once said: “European unity was a dream of a few people. It became a hope for many. Today it is a necessity for all of us.”
In this spirit, with the EU Certificate Program, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Turkey is making an important contribution to deepening understanding within Turkey about the European Union, its institutions and its key policy areas. At the same time, the program helps maintain within Turkey an interest in Europe, and advances European values.
The 111th EU Education and Certification Program was held at the ÇOMÜ on five days between the 4th and 8th of March, 2019. Participation was free and open to the public. At the end of the event, nearly 130 EU Educational Certificates were awarded to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students as well as other participants on behalf of KAS Turkey, TANDEM and ÇOMÜ.
The first day of the certificate program began with opening speeches by lecturer Dr. Nihal Eminoğlu, faculty member of the Department International Relations at ÇOMÜ, and by project coordinator of KAS Turkey Anastasia Pazer.
Prof. Dr. Nail Alkan from Hacı Bayram Veli University, the director of TANDEM, launched the program with an interactive presentation on Turkey-Germany relations within the EU as well as the future prospects of the EU, considering, for example, the impact of Brexit. In this lecture, with high participation in the discussion, the topic of the EU accession of Turkey turned out to be of utmost importance.
In the lecture on the second day of the event, Dr. Nihal Eminoğlu explained the European Union's migration policy in the context of EU social policy. The issue is very topical and much discussed in Turkey, as Turkey hosts over 3.5 million Syrian refugees. As part of our program, Dr. Eminoğlu made an important contribution to the conveying of accurate information, thereby reducing prejudices and misinformation.
Dr. Levent Ersin Orallı delivered a presentation focusing on the topics of EU project management, EU training programs, scholarships and Erasmus on the third day of the certificate program. This event aroused enormous interest as the young participants were shown less known and alternative career paths.
Prof. Dr. Sezai Türk continued on the fourth day with a presentation about EU and EU media policy on social media. The discussion about the power of the media as well as the influence of social media on today's society led to much discussion.
On the last day, lecturer Bilal Karabulut presented the EU's security and defense policy, which was followed by intense debates on Turkey's role.
The event was concluded with the closing speech by the Dean of the Business and Administrative Sciences Faculty, Prof. Dr. Bünyamin Bacak, in which he sincerely thanked KAS Turkey, Tandem, the organizers of ÇOMÜ as well as the participants of the program.
Once again, the EU Education Program has shown that Turkey’s young academics and future leaders are very interested in the European Union and Turkey's accession to the EU.
