50 Years For Democracy And Freedom Worldwide

European and International Cooperation Of The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung

This year the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung celebrates its 50th anniversary of European and International Cooperation. Hence it publishes a report explaining the development from the beginning in 1962 to the present day. The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) was and still is committed to fostering democracy and the rule of law, to implementing social and market-economic structures and to promoting human rights. With its worldwide networks to the political and social elites and with its long-term partner structures, it participates in shaping policy in developing and emerging countries.

Der jüngste Staat der Welt wird ein Jahr alt – wie kommt der Staatsaufbau voran?

Vor genau einem Jahr war es soweit – nach einem Referendum Anfang letzten Jahres wurde am 9. Juli 2011 die unabhängige Republik Südsudan euphorisch aus der Taufe gehoben: Der mehr als zwanzigjährige Bürgerkrieg war beendet, der Jubel in Juba war groß. Doch schon bald schlug die Aufbruchstimmung in Katerstimmung um: Zentrale Konfliktpunkte mit dem nördlichen Nachbarn waren ungeklärt geblieben – so etwa der genaue Grenzverlauf, die Abwicklung des Ölgeschäfts oder die Verteilung der Öleinnahmen und Auslandsschulden. Diese Fragen wirken sich bis heute destabilisierend aus.

A Study Conducted by the Young Leaders Think Tank for Policy Alternatives

The members of the Young Leaders Think Tank for Policy Alternatives have worked intensively on the topic of (un)employment in Uganda with particular focus on the challenges for the youth. Based on ananalysis of the situation and the existing policies, the members have discussed and formulated policy recommendations that could help in addressing challenges of youth (un)employment in the country. The paper analyses the given context, legal framework and existing policies and outlines the policy recommendations from the perspective of the young generation.

Concepts and Principles of Democratic Governance and Accountability

A Guide for Peer Educators

The guide forms part of the "Civic Education Toolkit" under the project “Action for Strengthening Good Governance and Accountability” and is designed to serve as a simplified tool for use by civic educators and elected leaders in understanding the concepts of democracy, good governance and accountability. It clearly defines and explains the general concept of democracy and outlines the main "ingredients" of a democratic state and society. Particular attention is given to the specific Uganda context.

Facilitation Skills and Methods of Adult Education

A Guide for Civic Education at Grassroots Level

The guide is part of a comprehensive "Toolkit for Civic Education" which is being produced under the project “Action for Strengthening Good Governance and Accountability”. It is a comprehensive manual for trainers and facilitators of civic education activities which contains basic information on the concepts of civic education and adult learning and gives practical instructions on how to organise and implement trainings at grassroots level. Specific attention is given to facilitation skills and methods that can help the trainers apply an appropriate and effective methodology.

Multiparty Politics in Uganda

Reality Check 4

This 4th edition of the Reality Check deals with "multi-party politics in Uganda". It was written by the renowned political scientist Assoc. Prof. Yasin Olum and published by KAS. The report contains an assessment of the development, challenges and perspectives of multi-party politics in Uganda, covering areas such as the legal and institutional framework, the decentralisation process, election management and campaigning, the role and performance of political parties and other democratic actors, and factors such as ethnicity and religion.

Pro-Poor Development and Poverty Reduction in Uganda and the Idea of Social Market Economy

Proceedings of a High-Level Roundtable Discussion organised by KAS and ACTADE

The publication compiles the input presentations and results of the discussions at a high-level roundtable on the topic „Pro-Poor Development and Poverty Reduction in Uganda and the Idea of Social Market Economy“, held on 3rd November 2011 at the Serena Hotel in Kampala. The discussion was organised by the African Centre for Trade and Development (ACTADE) with support from the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and brought together an exclusive number of 30 invited participants with leading roles and particular expertise in the areas of economic governance, development and poverty reduction.

Uganda Media Review - Issue II

With support from KAS the Uganda Media Development Foundation (UMDF) published the second issue of the "Uganda Media Review". This year the journal focusses particularly on the topic "Media and Corruption". It features expert articles on a number of related topics and general media concerns as well as project briefs about the different UMDF-activities.

Das Beispiel Uganda

Ende des Jahres 2011 wird die Versammlung der Vertragsstaaten des Internationalen Strafgerichtshofes (IStGH) einen neuen Chefankläger für das Gericht bestimmen. Die neunjährige Ära des derzeitigen Anklägers, des Argentiniers Moreno Ocampo, nähert sich damit seinem Ende. Uganda war das erste Land, in dem der IStGH auf Einladung des Präsidenten Museveni Ende 2003 Ermittlungen aufnahm. Das Ende des Mandates Moreno Ocampos, und der Fakt, dass die Ermittlungen seit nunmehr fast acht Jahren andauern, bieten Anlass für eine Zwischen-betrachtung der bisherigen Arbeit des Gerichtshofes in Uganda.

We examine economic issues in Uganda through a policy lens: Which way for Uganda's economic development? Which obstacles does the country face? And how can political players set the course for economic growth? This series crafts policy papers to inform and inspire debates around economic progress in Uganda.
