On both sides of the Atlantic, experts and decision-makers are grappling with the question of how to deal with rapid digital growth.
Northern Virginia is home to the largest concentration of data centers in the United States. These centers generate significant tax revenue for local governments and help fund schools, infrastructure, and public services. At the same time, their electricity demand presents new challenges for local governments and communities. During the discussions, the importance of careful site planning, transparent communication, and early public engagement was therefore repeatedly emphasized.
In dialogue with regional economic development offices, the experts exchanged views on German and American experiences with the energy transition and data center infrastructure.
A visit to a Northern Virginia Community College demonstrated how closely digital infrastructure and workforce development are linked. Subsequent discussions with think tank representatives and the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce broadened the perspective on transatlantic economic relations, particularly considering the upcoming midterm elections.
Additionally, the delegation visited a data center and gained firsthand insights into the technical infrastructure that underpins cloud services, digital platforms, and a substantial portion of global communications.
