by Dirk Hegen

The Transatlantic Trade Week, organized with the American-German Institute (AGI), brought together high-level policymakers, trade experts, and industry representatives to explore pathways toward renewed cooperation. Against a backdrop of shifting political landscapes and evolving trade priorities, the week’s events underscored both the complexity and the urgency of transatlantic economic dialogue.

A round table titled “Transatlantic Economic Dynamics: Managing Conflict, Preparing for a Deal?” served as a forum for exchanges on key friction points in the U.S.-EU and U.S.-German trade relationships, including digital services taxation, the Digital Markets and Digital Services Acts (DMA/DSA), VAT regimes, and broader noneconomic concerns. The roundtable featured senior officials from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, leaders from German industry, and seasoned trade policy advisors. Daniel Caspary, Chair of the CDU/CSU Group in the European Parliament, gave the keynote speech. Caspary emphasized the importance of trust-building and mutual understanding in navigating the current trade environment.

The second event, a webinar titled “The Implications of New German and EU Politics for the Transatlantic Trade Relationship,” brought together a panel of experts to assess the broader policy shifts underway in Europe. The discussion focused on the evolving balance between economic security and free trade in German and EU policy, the potential impact of the Draghi Report, and the global ramifications of proposed changes to German fiscal rules and investment strategies.

Part of the Trade Week was a dialog program with Daniel Caspary. He met experts at Think Tanks such as the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), members of Congress and representatives of German companies in the U.S.
