Democracy in Crisis, Democracy in Change: From Popular Defiance to Citizen Participation
In partnership with L’Observatoire de la fonction publique et de la bonne Gouvernance (OFP) of the Saint-Joseph University in Beirut (USJ), the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) is holding on the 14th of November, 2019, a conference on the challenge of participative democracy in Europe and Lebanon with the participation of politicians, experts and academics from Europe and Lebanon. The conference will take place at the Amphithéâtre Gulbenkian, Bâtiment A, Campus des sciences sociales, rue Huvelin, in Achrafieh from 09:00 am until 18:00 pm. Even today, democracy is still a struggle of citizens against abuses not only in countries with authoritarian rule but also in some Western democracies that are currently experiencing a crisis of representative democracy. Therefore, the conference will tackle the following topics: “Challenges and limits of participatory democracy “, “The Internet at the service of citizen participation”, “Innovative local experiences” and then try to show ways “Towards a real citizen participation in Lebanon”

Workshop „Wirtschaftliche Stärkung von Frauen in ländlichen Gebieten“
Der Workshop wird von der KAS als Teil einer Veranstaltungsreihe zur wirtschaftlichen Stärkung von Frauen in ländlichen Gebieten angeboten. Ziel ist es, die teilnehmenden Unternehmerinnen in den Bereichen Finanzmanagement, Marketing und Branding zu fördern und untereinander zu vernetzen. Der theoretische Teil des Workshops wird ergänzt durch praktische Übungen, in denen die Teilnehmerinnen ihre Waren einer breiten Öffentlichkeit vorstellen.

Call for Applications Research Assistant in Lebanon
The Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), in cooperation with The Middle East Institute for Research and Strategic Studies (MEIRSS), seeks a full-time research assistant to play a key role in a project dealing with Lebanon’s National Defense Strategy. The aim is to support a research project analyzing the political situation surrounding possible negotiations over a defense strategy, both on a national and regional level.

The Trump administration has generated worldwide attention by moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, cutting funds to UNRWA and announcing the withdrawal of its troops from war-torn Syria in late December 2018.

Workshop for the Lebanese Army - CIMIC
The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Beirut and SMART Center, in close cooperation with and on the request of CIMIC, organized a 5-day workshop aiming at empowering army members by practicing non-violent communication techniques for effective conflict prevention and conflict resolution and at promoting civil-military cooperation within the Lebanese army.

Komparativer Workshop: multi-konfessionelle Gesellschaften mit Bürgerkriegsvergangenheit
Am 2. und 3. Dezember fanden sich 20 internationale Akademiker und Experten zu einem komparativen Workshop in Beirut zusammen, um über Gemeinsamkeiten und Herausforderungen multikonfessioneller Gesellschaften zu debattieren, die sich nach langjährigen Konflikterfahrungen um Einheit und Frieden bemühen. An dem Expertenkreis, der gemeinsam mit dem KAS Buero Bosnien-Herzegowina organisiert wurde, nahmen neben libanesischen Experten sechs Teilnehmer aus Bosnien-Herzegowina sowie weitere Experten aus dem Irak und Nordirland teil.

The conference took place at the Campus des sciences sociales of the University (Rue Huvelin), in Achrafieh in the presence of more than 100 participants (activists, academics, politicians, journalists and students) from Lebanon and abroad.

Stärkung der lokalen Wissensproduktion durch Schreib-und Kommunikationstraining
Vom 11. bis 14. November veranstaltete die KAS mit der lokalen Forschungsorganisation SYNAPS einen intensiven Workshop zum Schreiben, Edieren und Kommunizieren für 11 lokale Analysten und Autoren aus NGOs, öffentlicher Verwaltung und akademischen Instituten. Der Workshop bot eine umfassende Schulung in der Erstellung von Texten und deren adäquate Vermarktung.

Welche Außenpolitik für den Libanon: Neutralität im 21. Jahrhundert
Am Dienstag, den 24.09.2019, veranstaltete die Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Büro für Internationale Beziehungen der Libanesischen Kataeb-Partei im Phoenicia Hotel Beirut eine Konferenz mit dem Titel "Welche Außenpolitik für den Libanon: Neutralität im 21. Jahrhundert". Der Abgeordnete Samy Gemayel, Präsident der Kataeb-Partei, Dr. Malte Gaier, Leiter des Auslandsbüros der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung im Libanon, und Joelle Bou Abboud, Mitglied des Politischen Büros der Kataeb-Partei, eröffneten die Konferenz, die mit zwei vertieften Expertenrunden fortgesetzt wurde.

Resist, Maneuver, or Concede? Three Paths for Iran Facing US Resolve
Am Donnerstag, den 12.09.2019, organisierte die Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Zusammenarbeit mit Maison du Futur einen Simulationsworkshop in Bikfaya. Thema des Workshops war "Resist, Maneuver, oder Concede? Three Paths for Iran Facing U.S. Resolve" und drehte sich um drei mögliche Szenarien im Kontext der Spannungen zwischen dem Iran und den USA. Ziel dieser politischen Konfliktsimulation war es, mögliche Dynamiken und Auslöser der unterschiedlichen Szenarien zu analysieren, um das Bewusstsein für eskalierende Faktoren zu schärfen.

Capacity building of CIMIC/LAF in conflict resolution and mediation
The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organized together with Lebanese Association for Mediation and Conciliation (LAMAC) for the 3rd time a conflict resolution and mediation training for 25 officers of various units of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) for 5 days under the patronage of LAF’s Department of Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC ).

Capacity building of CIMIC/LAF in proposal writing and project management
The Konrad Adenauer Foundation organized in cooperation with SMART Center a 5-day workshop on proposal writing skills, from the 29th of August to the 4th of September at CIMIC training premises in Fayyadieh. This training was provided for 25 officers from various units of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) under the patronage of LAF’s Department of Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC ) and it is a follow up training for the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) after successfully completing a training program during May 2018, which included topics related to Project Planning, Field Operation, Communication, Conflict Resolution and Mediation Skills.

Development of the Lebanese Gas Resources, Opportunities and Challenges
Am 07. August 2019 veranstaltete die Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) eine Roundtable-Diskussion zu aktuellen Entwicklungen der libanesischen Gasressourcen im östlichen Mittelmeer. Gemeinsam mit zahlreichen Experten zum Thema sowie Vertretern ausländischer Botschaften wurden Chancen und Herausforderungen der Gasförderung durch den Libanon diskutiert. Die Veranstaltung fand im Lancaster Plaza Hotel in Raouche statt. Im Mittelpunkt stand die Vorstellung von Brigadegeneral Khaled Hamades Policy Paper zum Thema „Development of the Middle East Gas: Opportunities & Challenges“.

Economic Empowerment of Women in Rural Areas – Halba/Akkar
The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Beirut, in partnership with the Committee for Women and Children at Lebanese Parliament, the SMART Center and the Union of Municipalities of Al Shafat launched the third and last workshop out of three entitled “Economic Empowerment of Women in Rural Areas”. The workshop took place on the 15.07.2019 in Halba - Akkar in the presence of women from Wadi Khaled, Akkar and Tyre and women entrepreneurs, mayors and dignitaries from the region. The workshop, aimed to shed the light at the women entrepreneurs in the region and train them in areas related to financial management, marketing and branding. It also gave the women entrepreneurs from the region the opportunity to network with women entrepreneurs from the region of Tyros and with each other. The theoretical part of the workshop was complemented by practical exercises as well as an exhibition in which the participants presented their goods to a broad public and to each other for peer review.
