From September 15th to 17th, a collaborative effort between the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and the Middle Eastern Institute for Research and Strategic Studies (MEIRSS) gave birth to the inaugural edition of the P.A.C.E (Political Activism and Civic Engagement) workshop. This program is committed to empowering the dynamic youth of Lebanon, equipping them with essential knowledge, skills, and aspirations needed to actively contribute to the transformation of their local communities and the nation at large.
Throughout the three days of the workshop, participants examined the importance of civic engagement and the pivotal role of youth in driving societal change, while also addressing the essential strategies for effective youth political activism and the common barriers faced by young political activists in Lebanon. Furthermore, the candidates had the chance to enjoy a revitalizing morning hike amidst the breathtaking scenery of Mount Lebanon while exploring the tumultuous 100 years of political crises that marked Lebanon’s past. In this vein, engaging discussions with local authorities shed light on the intricate dynamics of the nation's political landscape. Furthermore, participants acquired knowledge about autonomous communities and individual action, which encouraged critical thinking and personal agency. This segment also highlighted certain European values, such as assisting citizens in making informed decisions through the implementation of political awareness projects. Also participants gained valuable insights into the current economic crisis in Lebanon and had the opportunity to explore potential reform solutions and practical steps about change management. Additionally, the participants had the chance to engage in a bonfire discussion, fostering camaraderie and deeper understanding among the participants.
The final day of the workshop introduced participants to the art of debating, offering comprehensive training sessions on how to craft, defend, and articulate their arguments following the British parliamentary model. The most proficient candidates had the privilege to compete in a culminating debating round, adjudicated by an esteemed jury. The workshop concluded with a graduation ceremony and a heartfelt closing, celebrating the growth and accomplishments of the participants as they embarked on their journey towards becoming active change-makers in Lebanon.
