Pacific Political Party Workshop - Regional Programme Australia and the Pacific
Workshop
Details
Though incredibly important, democratic governance and processes require more than well-functioning elections, parliaments, an independent judiciary and other oversight institutions. It also needs a strong culture of democracy, in particular robust, transparent, internally democratic and accountable political parties. Political parties therefore represent a keystone of democratic governance.
Throughout the Pacific region, political parties are mostly young and in the early stages of their development. This workshop will therefore discuss opportunities to support and strengthen political parties in the Pacific. The focus of the workshop is to encourage dialogue amongst political arty representatives, officials from political party commissions and electoral management bodies, civil society organisations and experts in ordert to support the democratic development of political parties in the Pacific.
Participants at this workshop will include representatives from Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, Cook Islands, Tonga, Australia and New Zealand.
