Start.Up! Germany – Bringing entrepreneurs from the Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia to Germany

by Fabian Blumberg
The number of startups in Saudi Arabia is growing steadily and is actively promoted under the Saudi Vision 2030. One goal of the Vision is to diversify the Saudi economy and in particular to enable young people and women to participate in the economy by helping them to set up their own businesses.

As part of its objectives to empower women and youth, the regional program Gulf States of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung sponsored on July 9, 2019, the pitch night of the German-Saudi Startup Competition in Jeddah, which was organized by the German-Saudi Arabian Liaison Office for Economic Affairs (GESALO).

The idea:

Saudi startups in the field of health care and five Saudi Startups in the field of Internet of Things present their startup projects. A jury then select the two winners, who are rewarded by giving them opportunity to participate in a startup tour to Germany at the end of September 2019, where they will get to know the German startup ecosystem.

Health care startup participants:

Brain Ai

Grapefruit

MayaClinic

Medical Consultant

YouPositiv

Internet of Things startup participants:

Hayatech

Rabt Technologies

Rshed

Sadeem

Spectria

Jury work and winners:

The jury was composed of representatives of the Delegation of German business for Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Yemen (GESALO), German Consulate General Jeddah, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), IKEA Forward Accelerator, Siemens Healthineers, DGTAL X SAP Middle East and North Africa, Alexander & Partner and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.

Based on different rating criteria such as technological advancement, business strategy and social impact, the jury decided that winners were YouPositiv and Sadeem.

YouPositiv offers certified coaching services to businesses and individuals while Sadeem offers Smart City solutions that conserve resources, but also provide information on potentially dangerous environmental developments that could lead, e.g., to smog or flood.
