Details

At this event, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in partnership with Bright Blue will be launching our essay collection entitled "European climate diplomacy in the wake of COP26". It addresses three key areas of climate diplomacy: innovation, technology and climate change; migration and climate change; and, decarbonisation and the control of China. It brings together essays from UK politicians, members of the European Parliament, academics and thought leaders to discuss the challenges and solutions associated with each of these areas.

Despite the UK’s departure from the EU, there is still a case to be made for close cooperation between the two on climate change. The two major global actors are some of the largest donors of foreign aid, and share a challenge with respect to future migratory pressures given their close proximity. Additionally, in an increasingly authoritarian world which is being overshadowed by China, the need for deeper cooperation between liberal democracies has never been greater. The high-profile panel will discuss how UK and European policymakers can work closer together to tackle climate change and the geopolitical implications it gives rise to.

Key questions:

  • Does climate change present an opportunity for deeper collaboration between the UK and Europe?

  • What will changes in migration to Europe look like as a result of climate change and how should policymakers respond to this?

  • Are the UK and European nations doing enough to support the green transition in developing countries, and if not, what more could they do?

  • Has COP26 delivered enough support for developing countries to combat climate change?

  • How can the UK and Europe facilitate green growth globally, whilst challenging China's economic influence?

  • What impact will climate change have on the UK and Europe in the near future?
