Since, Lebanon is going through its worst economic crisis in its history, and amid all the uncertainties regarding the future, there is an opportunity to build a better future at least when it comes to energy.
The energy sector has been at the heart of all reform plans since at least 2018. The crisis the country is in, is and will be affecting the energy sector and electricity provision. Therefore, now more than anytime we need to rethink the energy strategy, to build a forward-looking sector that can help Lebanon get out of the meltdown as smoothly as possible.
The role of oil and gas sector in Lebanon, the Latest developments: geology, geography and geopolitics, the governance opportunities and challenges, the future directions, the role of Renewable energy sector in Lebanon (un-exploited potentials and opportunities) as well as the state of the Electricity sector in Lebanon at the heart of reforms were among the key discussed topics.
All these topics are interconnected and interlinked, and definitely all sectors have been affected by the mismanagement of the political class. That is the discussion was divided between current status and recommendations for the future.
It is worth mentioning that the webinar was one-of-a-kind in terms of the reliance on the post-Covid hybrid event. I team of professional cameramen carried out the live coverage and streaming of the event on KAS social media platform. This Covid avert technique allowed to the outdoor gathered panelists the opportunity to interact with the virtual audience (+100 persons) and succeeded in reaching the following intended objectives:
- To update the public about the current Oil and Gas sector news in Lebanon
- To discuss the future of the Oil and Gas sector vis-à-vis market demand and extraction feasibility
- To emphasis on the importance of electricity reform and strategic power planning (focusing on renewable and sustainable sources of energy)
- To map and analyze the role of the private sector and the international community in financing a comprehensive (corrupt free) power strategy in Lebanon
This webinar will be followed up with the elaboration of a policy paper tackling the immediate reforms that should be implemented to keep the lights on.
