In today’s digitized media ecosystem, the economics of journalism are being rewritten constantly. Audiences engage differently, trust differently, and pay differently – if they pay at all. Media funding has always mattered, but where the business model once seemed simple, it is now increasingly a matter of survival for media outlets.
To discuss the most pressing issues of media funding, in Zagreb, between March 25th and 26th 2026, the KAS Media Programme SEE is bringing together journalists, media executives, and business experts from more than 10 countries in the region and beyond. The conference will include discussions on whether paywalls can sustain quality journalism, the extent to which philanthropic models can safeguard editorial autonomy, the viability of crowdfunding, and what challenges emerge as Big Tech’s influence over media continues to grow.
