Third Training - MENA Leadership Academy – Generation 4

Capacity Building Training on Debate, Public Policy, and Democracy

Between 15 and 19 March, 2023, KAS PolDiMed will organize the third training of MENA Leadership Academy program (Generation 4) in Rabat, Morocco. Building on the outcomes of the previous editions, this round of capacity-building training, both theoretical and practical oriented, will aim specifically to train the MENA LA fellows on how to (1) be more persuasive using debate and critical thinking skills, (2) write policy papers, and (3) best apply democracy.

KAS-MEDAC Alumni Circle

Inception and Discussion on the Future of Euro-Mediterranean Relations

On June 14th, 2022, KAS and MEDAC are jointly organizing the first Alumni Circle—a conference, in Malta, designed to connect KAS-MEDAC scholars and alumni together with decision makers and experts from both shores of the Mediterranean to create an inter-generational dialogue on the Euro-Med relations and exchange inter-cultural learning experiences.

MENA Leadership Academy 4

The basics of democratic participation through CSOs and political parties

The Regional Program Political Dialogue South Mediterranean of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung - KAS PolDiMed organizes a two-year regional youth program, entitled "MENA Leadership Academy - MENA LA". The academy offers, for 22 young participants from the MENA region, four trainings and aims to strengthen organizational and functional capabilities of CSOs and young members of political parties. The program will also focus on individual skill training, such as communication and negotiation. The first component of the training cycle will take place in Tunis between 14 and 16 June 2022 where the participants will have 2 full days of continuous training on the role and functions of civil society and political organizations in the context of development in the MENA region.

L’Académie Européenne d’Automne à Otzenhausen

Le Programme Régional Dialogue Politique Sud Méditerranée de la Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) organise un séminaire d’introduction aux institutions de l’Union européenne (UE) et aux relations entre l’UE et les pays du Maghreb. Se tenant du 16 au 26 octobre 2022, ce séminaire se déroulera à l’Académie Européenne d’Otzenhausen, en Allemagne. Pour cette formation de dix jours, la KAS est à la recherche de 24 jeunes adultes (étudiants et représentants de la société civile) ressortissants des trois pays du Maghreb central, à savoir l’Algérie, le Maroc et la Tunisie.

Local Voices Towards Permanent Dialogue in the Mediterranean

The event “Local authorities and bankable urban transformation projects: access to international funds” aims at offering a better understanding of the opportunities to finance sustainable urban development actions through grants; loans and blended mechanisms. The event has a mixed component of political exchanges and technical training, by targeting both Mayors and high-level technical staff of local development units working on big urban projects.

Euro-Mediterranean Transport and Logistics: A Catalyst of Regional Cooperation in the Aftermath of the Global Economic Crisis

On May 9 and 10 May, 2023, the Regional Programme Political Dialogue South Mediterranean of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS PolDiMed) and the Union of the Mediterranean on Federations of Enterprises (BUSINESSMED) organized a conference on the “Euro-Mediterranean Transport and Logistics: A Catalyst of Regional Cooperation in the Aftermath of the Global Economic Crisis” in the city of Tangier, Morocco.

Diskussionsveranstaltung der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung bei der Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz

Die Abteilung Naher Osten und Nordafrika der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) veranstaltete am 17. Februar 2023 im Rahmen der Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz (MSC) erstmals eine Diskussionsrunde in den MSC-Räumlichkeiten im Bayerischen Hof. Der Einladung des KAS-Vorsitzenden, Bundestagspräsident a.D. Professor Norbert Lammert, zu einer Abendveranstaltung zum Thema „A New Club Méditerranée? The Eastern Mediterranean from Rivalry to Rapprochement” folgten hochkarätige Entscheidungsträgerinnen und -trägern aus Politik, Militär, Diplomatie und Think Tanks aus Griechenland, der Türkei, Libanon, Israel und Ägypten sowie zahlreicher europäischer Staaten.

Prospects and Challenges for 2023

On 19 December 2022, KAS PolDiMed organized two panel discussions in Tunis on two burning subjects that have been invading the public and political spheres in the Southern Mediterranean region. The event, “Food Security and Geopolitics in the Southern Mediterranean - Prospects and Challenges for 2023”, was attended by civil society actors, politicians and academia from Tunis and international envoys who reaffirmed their interest in the topics discussed and learned about the recent developments in the questions brought up.

Local voices towards permanent dialogue in the Mediterranean

Local authorities acting for agrifood and energy resilience

On the 5th and 6th of December 2022, the Political Dialogue South Mediterranean of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in cooperation with the Barcelona-based institute MedCities co-organized a round-table in Hammamet entitled « Local authorities acting for agrifood and energy resilience ». The event managed to bring together mayors, experts, and local actors from across the Mediterranean to discuss the current and most pressing challenges faced by Mediterranean municipalities in terms of food, water, and energy security.

Social Dynamics in Libya and the Importance of the Tribal Factor

On 28 November 2022, the Regional Programme Political Dialogue South Mediterranean of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS PolDiMed) in cooperation with the Madrid-based think tank Stractegia, co-organized an expert workshop in Tunis entitled: “Social Dynamics in Libya and the Importance of the Tribal Factor”. The event successfully managed to bring together influential actors in Libya namely, academics, civil society actors, functionaries, and tribal leaders who discussed the role played by tribes in the sociopolitical Libyan dynamics

Rethinking Youth Political Activism in the MENA Region

Between 7 and 11 November 2022, KAS PolDiMed organized the second training of MENA LA 4 in Istanbul, Turkey. The training aimed to increase the knowledge of the participants about citizen participation and inclusive governance to encourage more participation in the civic and political life.

Between 2 and 5 November 2022, KAS PolDiMed invited the Executive Board members of the European Democrat Students (EDS) association to discuss the current developments in the South Mediterranean region and the Euro-Med relations. The delegation was accompanied by Mr. Patrick Voller, Foreign Policy Advisor of the European People ́s Party.

The European Union and the Maghreb Region: Challenges, Issues and Prospects for Future Cooperation

Between 16th and 26th October 2022, the European Academy Otzenhausen (EAO), in cooperation with KAS PolDiMed, organized a seminar on ‘The European Union and the Maghreb Region: Challenges, Issues and Prospects for Future Cooperation’. Based of a number of well-designed lectures, discussions, workshops, and field visits, the seminar brought together 17 brilliant participants, both students and young professionals, from Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, to develop a better undrstanding on the EU institutions and the EU-Maghreb relations.
