Political Change
In recent years, domestic politics in both Europe and Asia have become less predictable and prone to sudden, unexpected changes. In this issue of our journal, authors reflect on contemporary changes in the domestic political architectures in both Europe and Asia and analyze causes, drivers, and impacts in order to get a better understanding of political renewal - for better or worse.
Security Architectures Under Threat: The Status of Multilateral Fora
In this issue of our biannual journal Panorama: Insights into Asian and European Affairs, the papers provide an insight into the current security landscape in the context of the new global security challenges. Based on analyses of the different threats and dynamics, the papers also look at ways to strengthen cooperative security arrangements.
ASEAN at 50- A Look at its External Relations
As ASEAN marks its 50th anniversary, we have dedicated this issue of our journal Panorama Insights into Asian and European Affairs to analyse ASEAN’s relations with several of its dialogue partners in the ever changing global landscape. In view of its external relations, the articles also reflect on ASEAN’s achievements in the last five decades, challenges it has overcome, and the prospects ahead.
Countering Daesh Extremism - Responses from Europe and Asia
This special issue of Panorama: Insights into Asian and European Affairs was published in collaboration with The International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies,Singapore. The papers in this issue analyses recent developments concerning Daesh extremism and their implications on societies in Asia and Europe.
Refugees in Asia and Europe
In this issue of our journal Panorama: Insights into Asian and European Affairs,we present an analysis on the refugee crisis being faced in Asia and Europe. In 2015, the biggest refugee movements to Europe since the Second World War and the case of the boat refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh has led to the biggest humanitarian crisis of recent times. A high number of refugees to Europe also originate from Asia or transit through the region. Thus, with this publication we try to contribute to the exchange between the two regions to address this crisis jointly.
Nationalism in Asia and Europe
Nationalism is a powerful human force that is on the resurgence in Asia and Europe. The effects of globalisation have inflamed nationalistic sentiments in people all over the two continents. This issue of Panorama: Insights into Asian and European Affairs offers perspectives on the evolving nature of nationalism, including its relationship to regional integration efforts and globalisation, as well as its impact on the domestic and foreign policies of countries in Europe and Asia.
From the Desert to World Cities - The New Terrorism
In this issue of Panorama: Insights into Asian and European Affairs, we have asked authors from various countries to shed light on the factors that have contributed to the recent development in the Middle East and to discuss the implications of terrorism on societies in Asia and Europe. Special attention was given to the recruitment of young people, the attractiveness of terrorist groups to the youth, the role of religion and social media, as well as preventive de-radicalization measures.
Europe - Surging Forward
Has Europe failed? If one reads some of the critical comments of recent years, this impression may actually arise. Does all this together mean that the project of ever closer European Union is unrealistic, and that EU member states should instead rely more on national forces again and seek to step away from integration into common European structures and institutions? For this issue of Panorama, we have asked authors from different European countries to analyze the European integration and the European Union from their points of view.
More than a game: Sports, Society and Politics
In this edition of the Panorama, we explore the relationship between sports and politics and the impact it has on societies globally. Although the adage says that sports and politics do not mix, sports is actually more than just a game. Sports and sporting events serve a wide variety of political purposes, ranging from a supposed symbol for peace to a staging ground for rivalries at the local, regional, national and international levels.
Myanmar in Transition: Polity, People & Processes
In the last years, Myanmar’s political transition from military authoritarianism to an evolving parliamentary system has gained worldwide attention and praise. Our office in Singapore has put a key focus on Myanmar in the past. This issue of Panorama aims at contributing to the understanding of Myanmar’s political transition by analyzing the focal areas of it- institution-building, principal actors and long-term processes that will hopefully lead toward a democratic, federal state.
Local Politics and Governance
Local governments are the basis of a political system. People’s lives are directly shaped by the decisions of local politicians and good local governance can improve the living conditions significantly. But local governance faces many challenges nowadays. This issue of deals with the role and importance of local politics and governance in Asia and Europe. The articles provide an overview of the challenges faced by various Asian and European countries and demonstrate possible reactions to these issues.
Youth - Future Agents of Change or Guardians of Establishment?
This issue is concerned with the engagement of young people in political processes and society. In Europe, but also in Asia, young people get more actively involved in politics, demand for changes and try to shape the society. The Arab spring, which was strongly driven by young people, is a good example of how the youth can be an agent of change. The articles demonstrate the role the youth plays in Asian and European countries, arguing that young people are key players and that their demands have to be taken seriously by the establishment.
Asia and Europe - Moving Towards a Common Agenda
This edition analyzes the actual “state of the art” of the bilateral relations between Asia and Europe. On the one hand, Asia and Europe share a series of concerns which in principle could provoke closer cooperation; but on the other hand, each region is preoccupied with its own agenda, which distracts attention for relations with the other side. Therefore it needs permanent efforts to transfer knowledge and information from one side to the “other” and to indicate areas of concern which in many cases are areas of common concern.
A Future For Democracy
This issue focusses on the current and future state of democracy in different countries in the world, predominantly in Central and East Asia, but also Latin America and South Africa. The articles demonstrate the key factors contributing to the current pace of democratic developments in the examined countries, arguing that, especially in Asia, the political course of action, but also the societal attitude towards democracy proves to be a hindrance to any democratization efforts within this region.
Ageing And Politics - Consequences for Asia and Europe
This edition of Panorama deals with the topic of ageing and the challenges that occur due to the demographic changes. We present some specific issues regarding ageing which will be discussed in overview articles for both continents, Asia and Europe. These articles focus on the aspects of employment, social security system, and policy challenges. Additionally, we present some analyses which deal with the consequences and challenges of the ageing phenomenon for some specific countries.
20 Years: Fall of the Berlin Wall
20 years ago, on 9 November 1989, the Berlin Wall came down. With Unification in Germany, profound changes took place not just domestically but also throughout Europe and the world. In this issue, a selected group of German authors present the implications the Fall of the Wall had for Germany, Europe and the international system. In addition, authors from different countries describe and evaluate the perception and consequences of the Fall of the Berlin Wall from an “outsider’s point of view”.
Security Politics in Asia and Europe
In this issue of Panorama we bring together experts from Asia and Europe to offer the different dimensions of security politics in these two regions and its intersection with global security. This volume tries to present the various security political issues and factors which confront Asia and Europe.
