War das Elsass eigentlich schon immer eine Grenzregion mit dem Rhein als Begrenzungslinie? Auf diese Frage ging Prof. Dr. Dieter Speck, Lehrbeauftragter an der Universität Freiburg, in seinem Vortrag vor knapp 80 interessierten Gästen in Bad Krozingen ein. Um diese Frage zu beantworten, zeigte der Historiker zunächst von der römischen Antike ausgehend, die geschichtliche Entwicklung der Region auf. Das Gebiet des Elsass sei lange Zeit nicht genau eingegrenzt gewesen. Zum einen hätten die Menschen damals festgelegte Grenzen in der heutigen Form nicht gekannt, zudem wäre eine Grenzfestlegung kaum möglich gewesen, da der Rhein zur damaligen Zeit häufig seinen Verlauf änderte und somit nicht als Grenzlinie hätte dienen können. An Hand von historischen Karten erläuterte Professor Speck anschließend, dass das Gebiet zunächst von den Römern erobert wurde, dann Teil des Ostfränkischen Reiches wurde und später unter habsburgischer Herrschaft stand. Am Ende des 30-jährigen Kriegs wurde das Elsass dann vom französischen König annektiert. Es gehörte zollrechtlich aber weiterhin zum Reich und stellte somit eine Brücke zwischen den habsburgischen und den französischen Gebieten dar. Aber auch kulturell, so machte der Historiker deutlich, sei das Elsass keine Grenzregion gewesen. In dem Gebiet habe man oft sowohl deutsch als auch französisch gesprochen. Auch gab es enge Verbindungen zwischen den Universitäten in Freiburg und Dole. Somit sei das Elsass bis in die Neuzeit hinein nicht als Grenz-, sondern als Durchgangsregion zu sehen.
