The global pandemic puts the public health system at risk and magnifies inequality. This raises many questions about the origin of the coronavirus. Some experts argue that the disease is linked to wildlife trade and consumption, with transmission happening from animals to humans. Even if this thesis remains unproven, global wildlife trafficking is now under the spotlight. Tackling this issue as well as habitat exploitation is not merely about enforcing any restrictions. This is also a way to acknowledge rural livelihoods and economic factors that cause contact between humans and wild species. Besides, the effects of the climate change – reduced yield of livestock, food insecurity, droughts, and poverty –  also push humans to invade the forests. Therefore, climate change mitigation is also crucial to end wildlife trade and habitat exploitation.

The news agency Bangkok Tribune, supported by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Thailand, is organizing an online conference to discuss and explore new paths in terms of ecosystem protection and related health risk reduction after the coronavirus outbreak. This is in the hope that human beings can safely live in harmony with the nature through green and sustainability-oriented policies, while wildlife species are saved from extinction.

This conference is the third of a series of Media Dialogues on current Thai, regional, and global developments organized by the Bangkok Tribune and the KAS. It will take place on Tuesday, June 30 at 13:25 (Bangkok Time) via Facebook Live from SEA-Junction, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), and will be conducted in Thai language.
